فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
fa dhakkir inna maa anta mudhakkir -
So remind, surely you are a reminder. [Ghashiyah 88:21]
Allah didn't even say - fa dhakkir HUM (then remind THEM)
Allah is telling His Messenger that you don't need to worry about them (those who disbelieve). They will believe or they won't believe.
But you just have to fulfill the obligation of conveying the message and reminding them.
وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ
wa Qul-il haqqu min Rabbikum fa man shaa'a fa-l yu'min, fa man shaa'a fa-l yaKfur.. -
and Say the truth is from your Master, so whoever wants will believe, and whoever wants is ungrateful/disbelieve.. [al Kahf 18:29]
The people have to believe, but if they don't, they will enter a Fire in the next life - and this is why the Messenger is afraid for them.
However, the disbeliever thinks the Messenger is trying to convince them for an ulterior motive or for his own benefit. And this is why they continuously reject him and accuse him.
وَيَا قَوْمِ لَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالًا ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى ال
And O people, I am not asking you for reward, My reward is with Allah (Hud 11:29)
You are nothing but a Continuous Reminderer (mudhakkir)
[Ghashiyah 88:21-22]
So Allah is telling His Messenger that they [the non muslims] will debate you, and insult you and put false labels on you (that the Messenger is insane, has ulterior motives, etc.) but Allah is telling us;
Fa dhakkir - then continue to remind.
Remind about what?
That Allah is our Originator, that we are responsible in obeying Him, and that we will be asked about our actions on Judgment Day, and we will go to Hell or Paradise as a result.
If they accuse us or the Messenger of anything, ignore them. Because Allah has already confirmed that His Messenger is not a liar or insane person. So we just need to continue reminding about the main message of Islam through the Quran;
1 - Allah's signs.
2 - Our Responsibility infront of Allah.
3 - the Payback of disbelievers and believers [Hell or Paradise].
Surah Nun/Qalam: starts off with Allah telling His Messenger that you are not insane/mad/schizophrenic etc. by the favour of your Master [Qalam 68:2] And at the end of the surah He tells us that the disbelievers say he is insane [Qalam 68:51]. But just the pure message of the surah has proven he is not, and by the end of the surah - you don't even feel that their insults are a big deal.
Our job is not to convert anyone, but just to deliver the message. It might be that this warning and good news you give effects someone's heart in the future when you didn't expect.
Fundamental Ingredients of the Character of Prophet Muhammad which we need to Aim for:
He was reliable, trustworthy, someone you can rely on, who even the non Muslims appreciated.
We need to build such a character for ourselves in Islam so that people in societies feel that we are a good ideal example to follow.
Our job isn't to convert anyone, it is to remind people, and to make ourselves into people that others look upto and feel in awe of. Just like the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wasalam).
